“written in honor of poets and lyricists everywhere”
Poetry Genius
By: Janet Navarro
All hot and brash with your
cowboy hat cool
you write like a rock star
etching on monuments
erected with phrases
that emerge
out of the primal gully mud
you allow yourself to wallow in.
I think it’s the same slurry you
use like a spa mask to open
pores toward the sun
because
your
lines can transform
that stained armpit feel I get
sometimes from life —
You know –
that feeling of
linger from trying on
Goodwill blouses
with the bleached over traces
of someone else’s
anxiety?
— well, your stanzas
glean pearls
from those
closets and
turn traces of stale sweat
into moments
of full-mooned-happy-go-lucky
and memories of open-topped
Jeep rides
when Stairway to Heaven
riffs
carried us home.
bringing in the ringer!
